Walgreens got its start as early as 1901, opening up a drug store in Chicago, Illinois on a local corner, by Charles R. Walgreen, SR,. a Galesburg native.

Just a few years later in 1930, Walgreens had grown to 397 stores in 87 cities, grossing annual sales of 4 million dollars. People say this is thanks to the bootleg whiskey which Walgreen would often keep under the counter. The company was really not affected by the Great Depression. By 1934, the company had grown to over 601 stores in 30 states.

When Mr. Walgreen passed away in 1939, his son took over for him. His years in charge were prosperous, but he didn’t expand as in previous years. When he retired in the 1950s, Charles “Cork” R. Walgreen, III took charge and took the company into many modern conveniences such as bar code scanning.

The company continued to go through many changes of hands throughout the years, and as of one year ago they had a total of 8,169 stores covering all 50 states, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. They also bought Drugstore.com for $409 million on March 24, 2011.

Originally, Walgreens stores were connected to grocery stores. They paired up with Eagle Food Centers or Dominick’s while they were in Chicago. These stores generally had a walk through so you could go from the grocery store to the Walgreens. Eventually, Walgreens cut off their partnership with Eagle and just remained in the Dominick’s stores. In its 2009 business model, they had freestanding locations on corners facing the busiest street, truly making it a corner drug store and following after how many other pharmacies started. Usually, the store management team consists of a Store Manager, an Executive Assistant Manager and at least one Assistant Manager.
